Very Short Range Air Defense (VSHORAD) System

RBS 70 New Generation VSHORAD-system

Introduction

India is in the process of procuring a Very Short Range Air Defense (VSHORAD) system for use by the three services.

The initial requirement is for 5,185 units (USD 5.8 billion). Eventually, as many as 15,000 units may be procured.

Procurement Progress

Five vendors submitted bids against a global tender floated by India's MOD. These include  Russia's Rosoboronexport (IGLA), French Thales (Starstreak), South Korea’s LIG Nex1 (KP-SAM Shin-Kung), Sweden's SAAB (RBS-70 NG0) and French MBDA (Mistral) .

Four vendors have reportedly been selected for Field Evaluation Trials scheduled for May 2012.

The Thales Starstreak system was eliminated after technical evaluation.
